Dominicans

OP South SHIELD 1350From its institution in the year 1216, the Order of Friars Preachers, has had the sole mission of “preaching and the salvation of souls.”  St. Dominic, as a lover of poverty and the apostolic life, walked whenever he traveled and preached the Good News to whomever he encountered.  He promoted mendicancy (voluntary poverty and begging) and itinerancy (freedom to travel wherever needed by the Church) as the vehicles for the preaching of the Gospel.

Fr. Bruno Cadore, O.P., Master of the Order of Friars Preachers, in the Relatio de statu Ordinis to the General Chapter of Trogir (2013) encourages the friars to renew our vocations, our mission as preachers, and evangelization for which our Order was specifically founded.  This pilgrimage will be an act of evangelization as well as a Jubilee event.

In commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the Order, we have decided to undertake a preaching mission in the manner of our Holy Father St. Dominic.  For this reason, we have chosen to hold by certain principles along the way: to beg for hospitality, to live voluntary poverty by carrying nothing “extra” for the journey (Cf. Matthew 10:1-20), to make friends and evangelize along the way, to encounter other Christians, and to share our faith in Jesus Christ.  As Jesus moved about preaching the Good News from town to town, rarely staying in one place, and having no place to lay his head, we also undertake itinerancy, choosing not to remain in any one place for an extended time, preaching and moving on our journey.  Allowing the journey itself to be a sacra praedicatio––a manifestation of the holy preaching.
